The Institute of VLSI Design of Zhejiang University was established in the summer of 2000 as a center for research and teaching in VLSI design and design automation. It is now a key participant of the IC Design Open Lab of Zhejiang Province, and a major member institute of the Interdisciplinary Research Center on SoC of Zhejiang University.

Since its establishment, the Institute has gathered a group of experienced experts as its faculty members, led by Prof. Xiaolang Yan. The Institute offers a variety of graduate degree programs and undertakes wide-ranging research. Currently, there are more than 20 Ph.D. candidates and 80 master's degree students studying in the Institute.

The Institute has developed close contacts with research institutes of similar background from other universities, both in China and abroad. Research groups and professors from Peking University, Tsinghua University and Fudan University of Mainland China, NCTU and NTHU of Taiwan as well as UCLA, UCSB and Stanford of the U.S., all appear on the research collaborator's list.

Facing challenges directly from the world's IC Industry, the Institute, since 2003, has established a Joint Laboratory on SoC with Samsung Electronics, and a Joint Analog/Mixed-Signal IC Design Laboratory with National Semiconductor. The Institute has also developed friendly relationships with many enterprises in China's IC industry such as China IC Design Center (CIDC), Motorola (China), Fujitsu Microelectronics (Asia) and Semiconductor Manufacturing International (Shanghai) Corporation (SMIC).

Many research projects conducted by the Institute of VLSI Design are supported by Natural Science Foundation of China, China's National Science and Technology Programs (973 Program, 863 Program) and Natural Science Foundation of Zhejiang Province. Labs of the Institute are equipped with advanced workstations and testing instruments. The Institute has participated in both the Synopsys University Program and Cadence University Program. All the facilities provide an excellent environment for research, development and learning.

Pursuing Truth and Innovations. The Institute of VLSI Design of Zhejiang University is working hard to reach the aims on the wavefront of the flourishing tide of China's IC Industry.
